Entorno Natural:

The cave is at the foot of a large limestone hill, with hardly any vegetation, surrounded by meadows and barns, west of the River Miera.

Evidencias arqueológicas del sitio:

The middle course of the River Miera has a large number of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites. In the immediate surroundings of the cave, there is Salitre Cave (closed for conservation reasons), El Collado, El Llerao and El Rascaño.

Descripción general del destino:

A reconstruction of a Palaeolithic dwelling. The cave also contains reproductions of the paintings in Salitre Cave, both the red Solutrean and the black Magdalenian figures. Some of the natural bear pits in the cave display replicas of the original bones found in them.

Historia del sitio:

Sopeña Cave was explored by the Colectivo para la Ampliación de Estudios de Arqueología Prehistórica in the early 1980s. Salitre Cave was one of the first caves with Palaeolithic rock art to be discovered in Spain, in 1903. Its paintings were discovered and studied by Lorenzo Sierra and Alcalde del Río.
