Entorno Natural:

The Bierzo region is structured around several valleys belonging to the Sil River basin. It enjoys a mild Mediterranean microclimate, the result of the combination of the Atlantic and continental Mediterranean climates. The average annual rainfall is less than 730 mm and the average temperature is 12.3 °C. The temperate deciduous forests and the river valleys with extensive riverside woods are the preferred biotopes, with a rich and varied fauna in which the wolf, the bear, the wild boar and the deer stand out. Evidencias arqueológicas del sitio:

El Bierzo is an area of enormous archaeological wealth. Occupations from the Ancient Palaeolithic and the beginning of the Neolithic are the oldest vestiges. The settlements and rock art evidences (on petroglyphs and rock-shelters) of the Chalcolithic-Bronze periods are very numerous and important, as well as the fortified sttlements from the Iron Age.

Throughout the almost 900 m of development of the rock wall, some four hundred motifs painted in ochre, grouped in eleven panels, or in an isolated way, have been documented. All the manifestations are in Post-Paleolithic Schematic Painting, with an estimated chronology between the end of the Bronze Age and the regional Iron Age. The repertoire includes human and zoomorphic figures, branches, dots, stains, hands and other motifs that are more difficult to interpret.

Historia del sitio:

The group of cave paintings at Peña Piñera is distributed over a cliff of quartzite rock, about 10 to 20 metres high, overlooking the Cúa valley in the Bierzo region of Leon. The pictorial panels and isolated figures are located in shelters or sheltered areas of little depth, but also on smooth surfaces. The site is a National Monument (BIC, Element of Cultural Interest) and is located within the Ancares Leoneses Biosphere Reserve.

The site has a defined route for visits, duly signposted and with explanatory signs, which starts in the nearby town of Sesame and for reasons of accessibility covers only the northern sector, just over four hundred metres, including six of the pictorial panels and the traces of a Roman gold mine. At the tourist office in Vega de Espinareda is a permanent exhibition of post-Paleolithic cave art from the west of Castile and León, with specific information on the Peña Piñera complex and the route to be taken.
