Entorno Natural:

The site is located in the Santa Maria la Real de Nieva Massif, in the south-east part of the Duero Valley. The scenery is characterised by outcrops of slate and schist on an E-W direction.

Evidencias arqueológicas del sitio:

The site hosts one of the most important groups of open-air Paleolithic engravings in Iberia, tpgether with Siega Verde in Salamanca, and Foz Coa and Mazouco in Portugal. Engravings dating to Recent Prehistory and even Historical periods are frequent in the place. The engravings are located in a 12-km long area in the towns of Domingo García, Bernardos, Minguelañez and Ortigosa de Pestaño (province of Segovia).

Descripción general del destino:

Two stages in the production of the engravings can be differentiated. In the Palaeolithic, the engravings were cut or pecked in the rock, and represent horses, bovines and deer which are depicted in a naturalistic way and are totally static. In the post-Palaeolithic period, schematic representations of humans and scenes of fighting on horseback, weapons and dancing were produced by the technique of pecking.

Descripción de los recursos museográficos:

San Isidro Hill Petroglyph Visitor Centre with information about the archaeology of the area, in Domingo García. Several displays and models explain the history of the engravings or petroglyphs. There are replicas of the figures in slate and a display of the anthropomorphic burials in the necropolis at San Isidro Hermitage. Different didactic sign-postings are available.
