Entorno Natural:

This unique archaeological site is on the banks of the Águeda River, 15km downriver of the town of Ciudad Rodrigo, near a bridge and old water mill, at the last ford across the river before it enters Las Arribes. Pools of water exist even in the driest weather, doubtlessly making it a special place, chosen in Prehistory as a crossing place where the animals that came to drink could be observed.

Descripción general del destino:

This large group of animal figures were engraved on outcrops of schist on the left bank of the River Águeda, using techniques of fine engraving and pecking. Several animals are depicted, above all large ungulates (aurochs, horses, ibex and deer). They are generally in small groups of between 2 and 6 figures, forming large or medium-sized panels. However, isolated figures are also frequent, on small rock outcrops.

Historia del sitio:

The first examples of rock art were discovered in 1988 by M. Santonja and R. Pérez, while making the Archaeological Inventory of the Province of Salamanca. They have been studied by a large team under the supervision of R. de Balbín Berhman.

A single-storey building partly excavated in the bedrock holds a reception centre with information about the site, audiovisual presentations, an area for educational activities, a shop and administration services.
