Archaeological evidences in the site:
Nerja Cave houses an important collection of cave art. Although the oldest manifestations could date back to 24,000 before the present, the largest number of manifestations correspond to the Solutrense Cave Sanctuary, some 19,000 years old. The prehistoric artistic manifestations were mostly executed with red pigment, although figures in black are also documented. They are distributed both in the galleries open to tourism and in the so-called “Galerías Altas”, which are difficult to access. More than 50 figurative representations have been identified, reduced to a very limited group of animals: deer and hinds, horses and goats. From the Magdalenian period, only a series of lines executed in black pigment are known in Nerja. Some evidence of a surprising nature, such as the representations of red seals from the Camarín de los Pisciformes, are still not clearly dated, and may be the oldest works of art estimated until recently.
